Lord Vishnu established GAYASUR keeping a rock on his body and pressing it by his foot, as desired b holy demon. the foot print of Lord Vishnu known as Vishnupad become a sacred and Pious spot for Hindu. It is said that Lord Ramchandra come Gaya to offer Pinda Daan to his father Dasratha in Treta Yuga.
About Gaya
GAYA is a city in Bihar, India.Gaya is 100 kilometers south of Patna,
the capital city of Bihar. Situated on the banks of Falgu River (Niranjana,
as mentioned in Ramayana),it is a place sanctified by both the Hindu
and the Buddhist religions. It is surrounded by small rocky hills (Mangla-Gauri,
Shringa-Sthan, Ram-Shila and Brahmayoni) by three sides and the
river flowing on the fourth (eastern) side. The city has a mix of
natural surroundings, age old buildings and narrow bylanes. Gaya was
a part of the ancient state Magadha. In South Bihar, the most
prominent representative of Bhumihar Brahmin was the Tekari Raj
family, whose great estate in Gaya dated back to the early
eighteenth century . Gaya is one of the most prominent Hindu pilgrim
centres in India. From time immemorial, Hindu pilgrims from every
part of India arrive at the Panchakroshi Gayakshetra with their
offerings of Pinda to ensure peace for the departed souls of 12
generation of their deceased ancestors. It is said that an offering
of Pinda at Gaya ensures heavenly ascent for the soul.Gaya,
surrounded by three hills, Brahmayoni, Ramshila and Pretshila is an
important transit point to reach Bodhgaya (13km). Bodhgaya is that
auspicious place where Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment. There
is a heavy influx of Buddhists and international tourists at
Bodhgaya. A visit to the monasteries simply lift the soul! Every
inch of Gaya is wrapped with ancient temples, kunds and images
related to Hindu religion. The holy town effortlessly washes away
the scars of routined life and fills the soul with serenity.
